What makes Sussex Ranch beef different?+

Sussex Ranch is a small Texas Hill Country producer of Akaushi–Red Angus beef, pasture raised on rotated pastures and raised without hormones, antibiotics or growth stimulants. The Akaushi influence brings rich marbling and a buttery texture; the Red Angus side brings bold, beefy flavor.

Where is Sussex Ranch located?+

Our cattle are raised on our ranch in Comfort, Texas, in the Texas Hill Country. Ranch address: 201 Gaddis Blf, Comfort, TX 78013, USA.

What breed of cattle does Sussex Ranch raise?+

Akaushi–Red Angus cattle — a 50/50 cross of the Japanese Akaushi breed with our legacy Red Angus herd. Akaushi is a Wagyu breed known as “Japanese Red,” so Akaushi beef is technically Wagyu, though not all Wagyu is Akaushi.

How are the cattle raised?+

Grass-fed and grain-finished, grazing freely on rotated pastures with fresh water, and never given hormones or antibiotics. We use organic fertilizers and never use pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

Does Sussex Ranch ship beef?+

Yes. Orders being shipped must reach a 10 pound minimum, because frozen beef holds its temperature better in a fuller box. If your order is under 10 pounds you can add more beef — ground beef is an easy way to top off an order — or choose pickup at Sussex Ranch — Comfort. Pickup orders have no weight minimum. Shipped orders also need a merchandise total of at least $100; orders under $100 are pickup only. For orders over $575, please contact Ken to arrange shipping.

Can I purchase a half or whole steer?+

Yes. The Sussex Ranch price is $1,700 for a Half Steer and $3,200 for a Whole Steer. Each is reserved with an online deposit — $200 for a Half Steer and $400 for a Whole Steer. The deposit is not payment in full. The remaining ranch balance — $1,500 for a Half Steer or $2,800 for a Whole Steer — is due when the steer is delivered to the processor. Processing costs are separate and paid directly to the processor. Half and Whole Steer orders are not shipped by UPS; finished beef is picked up through the processor.

How does bulk beef ordering work?+

Pay your deposit online to reserve your beef — $200 for a Half Steer, $400 for a Whole Steer. Sussex Ranch then works with you to identify a mutually agreeable processor and processing time. When the steer is delivered to the processor, the remaining ranch balance becomes due — $1,500 for a Half Steer or $2,800 for a Whole Steer. From that point you work directly with the processor regarding cutting instructions, processing, pickup and processor payment. Processor location may vary based on availability and customer location. Half and Whole Steer deposits are purchased as their own order, separate from individual cuts and beef boxes.

How much freezer space will I need?+

A whole beef yielding approximately 500 pounds requires an estimated 12–15 cubic feet of freezer space. A half beef requires approximately half that amount. A typical full-size upright freezer should be adequate for a whole beef. Cuts are individually vacuum sealed and labeled by the mutually agreeable processor, and the order is provided frozen in boxes with an inventory sheet.

How much does a half or whole steer cost, and how long does it take?+

The Sussex Ranch price is $1,700 for a Half Steer and $3,200 for a Whole Steer, reserved with a $200 or $400 deposit. Processing costs are separate and paid directly to the processor. The typical waiting period is 2–3 months. Beef is dry-aged for a minimum of 14 days, and longer aging may be available by request. Quarter beef is not currently offered.

Can I pick up my order at the ranch?+

Yes. Pickup is available Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, by prior appointment, with no weight minimum. Ranch address: 201 Gaddis Blf, Comfort, TX 78013, USA.
